I've come across this thing called a Bodybugg  and how it tracks calorie burn and consumption better than a HR monitor - do you know if there's any truth to the said claims?

Alarivie,

Yes, it is true....the Bodybugg does much better than a heart rate monitor.  In fact, in 20/20, we will soon be marketing Sensewear armband (the more advanced version of the Bodybugg) services to alumni.  Stay tuned for more information.

Will they be making it available as part of the 20/20 program as well? I'm wrapping up phase 1 soon...and hopefully, at a price that's cheaper than 250$....

Do you have any blogs where you took on the Atkins diet -- specifically, his assertion that human fat does not come from fat intake, but by production of glycogen, and that only 1/4 of fat calories get converted, whereas high levels of carbohydrate calories (especially starches) get converted, making them more weight producing?  I would be interested in your findings.

I don't have any blogs about it.  However, I can tell you that Dr. Atkins was not correct in his assertion.  The accumulation of fat comes from *excess calories*, regardless of the source.  If it's excess fat, the body simply stores it.  If it's excess carbohydrate, the body turns it into fat.  If it's excess protein, the body turns it to glucose, then to fat.  If you are consuming more calories then you expend, then your body will turn those extra calories into fat.

I found an article on levity and health in that worthy journal known as 'Ladies Home' (July 2008 issue) - right in the 20/20 waiting area at the Pro Club in Bellevue. There was a refreshing reference to laughing during workouts and the associated benefit for one's heart rate, etc. I know that just being able to laugh out loud during my workouts got me through the first couple months of being in 20/20. Perhaps you could blog further on this fun topic?

James,

We're going to the beach this weekend and camping in a couple of weeks.  Usually, this brings to mind sodas, dogs, chips, & s'mores.  However, I'll be celebrating a little differently this year.  Any suggestions for "roughing it" 20/20 style?

Thanks!

Roughing it 20/20 style?  That's a question best answered by a dietitian, but I can give some suggestions.  To drink, rather than sodas, you can bring sparkling water, or vitamin water, or something a long those lines.  For snacks, turkey jerky and soy nuts can make good options.  Rather than cooking hot dogs, if you have a barbecue, try lean turkey breast burgers instead.  For chips, you can always try whole grain options like Triscuits.
